Generation Restoration

Usually with the coming of summer people think about their plans for the hot months. It is a time of enjoyment and memories that will last a lifetime. But we often don’t take time to think about the environment that makes it possible to begin with.

World Environment Day is the perfect time to think about the world we call home and how we can make it even more beautiful for the generations to come. This year’s theme is Generation Restoration; with the primary focus being to bring back soils and revive our precious water sources in an attempt to fight desertification and droughts that seem to be more frequent than they have been in recorded history.

There are many ways the average person can help with this process. Keep an eye on the health of your local trees. If you see trash around them, for example, then give them a helping hand and clear it up.

Trees not only help slow the process of global warming by absorbing carbon dioxide in the atmosphere but also help improve the quality of the soil that they reside in. They do this by holding the soil together within its roots and therefore acting as a prevention for soil erosion and overall degradation.

While you enjoy the summer sun and swimming in the sea you can also help our planet at every mealtime. By choosing a side of vegetables in comparison to a dairy or meat product is not only good for your body but good for the entire planet. By increasing our plant consumption as a population, we will increase the number of crops that are grown, and as a result increase the nutrient density of the soil and provide cover from the heat, therefore minimizing water loss and revitalizing it.

Finally, I would like to encourage any readers to invest in a small potted plant for their home. Not only does it provide a pop of freshness to your décor but also make a tiny difference in the quality of the air and the amount of carbon dioxide with it. While this may feel insignificant if everyone added simply one more houseplant to their home then we would have over 7 BILLION more plants in the world.

In the end the planet gave us life and the ability to sustain our livelihoods as well as the ones we love most. But for it to continue doing this we have to give our own little bit of love back to it.
